Magpies

What’s a small moment from your past that you still think about years later?

As many people are aware our Australian magpies are pretty feisty things. Don’t be fooled by their rambunctious personalities or melodic warbling. By the way their warbling is sublime, if it could by jarred and sold as healing tones, it could make some serious money. Anyway I digress.

When I was in primary school, around age nine, I was an avid runner – both sprint and cross country. I was running laps around the local park, when lo and behold I was repeatedly swooped at by a magpie. It was frightening, as they can be very aggressive and tenacious. Fast forward 25 years and I was swooped again while riding a bike during a community event. I came off my bike, bruising my knees and my ego. Shaken, I couldn’t continue and managed to carry my bike up and down train bridges.

So now I’m mindful of magpies, I’ve great peripheral vision, and try to make friends with the family of magpies in my immediate area. I still love their warbling, but am still highly cognisant of their world-class dive bombing skills.
