My favourite books from childhood were …

Do you remember your favourite book from childhood?

Always non-fictional encyclopaedia type books. I had a beautiful set of illustrated books detailing the life and inventions of scientists and inventors. I also had three very special books that I would literally pour myself into, devouring each and every glossy detail. The first was a book about horses, and how to care for all the different breeds. The second was similar but instead of horses it was a glorious collection of dogs, and every imaginable detail about dogs. Lastly, saving the best for last – Rocks, a beautiful book about rocks, including the geology, geography and history. I was obsessed with geology and rocks. I don’t know if I was gifted the book first and my area of interest followed, or conversely my passion for rocks and geology led to receiving the book. Either way, it was very special to me and held great pride of place in my beloved cubby house, until it burned down to the ground.

  1. A rock on a rock on a rock,
A pebble on a pebble on a pebble!
A stone on a stone on a stone!
    Arranged carefully on a table!
Upon a time when I was young,
That was a rhyme and a fable!
Now I’m aged, old and very old,
My grandfather had me once told!
