What are your thoughts on the concept of living a very long life?
My thoughts are that if you are able to live a healthy, happy and relatively productive life (completely subjective) then living a long life is preferable to having one cut too short. As a parent of a daughter with disabilities, hope and envisage both myself and my husband living long value rich and purpose driven lives. I want to be there to support her as she transitions from childhood to adulthood.
I’ve worked with clients well into their 90s and I can assure you that humour, passion, purpose and emotional intelligence can and does remain strong. In fact I have developed great compassion and confidence observing older people, and the ways they tackle life’s demands and challenges. I’m inspired time and time again. I’m forever entertained, amused and challenged by the perspectives, personalities and antics of my older clients. Half the time I think they give us younger ones a real run for our money, meaning they definitely challenge us. I’m grateful to be able to witness older people living full and rewarding lives, it helps to balance the other end of the spectrum, of those merely existing.
Look at the end of the day we are all human, we needed to remove labels that categorise, define or separate us from one another, whether it be age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and so on. Time we just connect person to person, heart to heart, soul to soul and mind to mind. After all age is just a social construct.
