Scour the news for an entirely uninteresting story. Consider how it connects to your life. Write about that.
Ok, I’m not going to lie; when I first read this prompt, my eyes sort of glazed over. Not sort of; they actually did. I thought, okay, that’s pretty uninspiring (to me); however, after reflecting upon it at a deeper level realised that it had more merit than I had originally given it.
I did a quick search of online news media, trying not to go down any of the RWNJ rabbit holes, aka media owned by Rupert Murdoch. As I know that their brand of news is much less about actual news and a lot more to do with intentional misinformation and disinformation. It is divisive and requires careful analysis to ensure I’m not unwillingly swallowing their BS as opposed to actual sourceable information.
So I scoured (great word, by the way) the news sites and chanced upon a simple article titled “What herbs and veggies you should be planting now” It was rather nondescript, innocuous. Its relevancy is based on the FACT that I am a keen gardener and would like to make sure I am making the most of the climate, soil, conditions etc.
However, on a much deeper esoterical level the article has another meaning. A more nuanced meaning. The concept of having someone else narrate my life gave me cause to think. The idea of crafting a story and manifesting it into being through plot, scene and character development piqued my interest. Yes, I can be very cerebral (okay a little more than sometimes). It made me reflect upon the concept of a person’s journey, their own unique character arc. When a writer writes a story, they bring it to life, word by word. Each word, paragraph and chapter brings with it further unfurling, till eventually embellished, ready to be viewed by others.
Life’s journey is much like the writer’s keyboard; every single letter, symbol, punctuation, and, word represents moments in time. Experiences that are framed within unique social, political and cultural contexts. Our life story is not fully complete until after we’ve left this world. Until then, each word, each letter, each moment matters. The writer is only able to write the present words, one word at a time. They cannot write the future (they can plan for it) however the reality is that we are in a constant string of ‘now moments’ strung together. That is where our power lay, in the ability to have choice and control in the moments, in the now. In our ability to live in the moment, understanding the intrinsic power of being grounded in the present, and not giving our power away worrying about the past or the future. When we worry too much about the “what ifs” and the “what’s going to happen” we can become crippled with anxiety. It is the equivalent of writer’s block. It is like having a “life block”. If we don’t like where our story is taking us, we can learn to respond (not react) change the tone, rewrite it, change the characters, the setting, the tone and themes. You can influence the journey’s arc. so go for it.
Yes, I have digressed. Yes, I have gone way off tangent, but hey it was my story to write. I hope this has resonated with at least one other person. To those who have read this blog, I say thank you “Thank you”, and I am “Grateful”. I, just as you are, am a work in progress.
