Yesterday I finally relented and stopped at the service station (servo) to fill my car with petrol. I was pumping petrol, watching the bowser display. Anyway, another driver was filling up, her car facing the opposite direction. Given that is it winter here (Southern Hemisphere) and we are currently having colder than normal weather, wind and rain, I just wanted to fill up, pay up and head off. I watched the lady fill up, and then head inside to pay (yes we pay after we have filled our tanks – apparently this is quite unusual in a global sense) Anyway, by the time I am ready to head in and pay, the lady has gotten back into her car, ready to drive off. I had been very mindful that she hadn’t closed her petrol cap before paying, and I was consciously waiting for her to return to her car and make sure she closed it. Like I had expected, she forgot to, instead she jumped in her car and started the engine. I quickly ran over, knocked on her window and told her “you’ve forgotten to close your petrol cap” She sighed and said “Thanks, sorry it’s been a pretty rough day” I smiled at her and simply went inside and paid for my petrol. I simply could have minded my own business and watch her drive off, with her petrol cap simply blowing in the wind and rain. Yet, I couldn’t. The funny thing is, I was literally ready for her to make that mistake, there was something about her, the way she moved, the way she carried herself, her shoulders slumped and distant smile.
