Blissful ignorance.

Daily writing prompt
Do you remember life before the internet?

Yes, I barely remember life before the internet. I barely remember a life before technology and information incessantly streaming through like intense light rays or sun beams. What was life before the inundation of data? I barely remember a life that was separate to, and not dependent on technology, data and connection. Was it a better way of living? The jury is still out on that, all I do know is that information is power, and what we’ve all witnessed of late is that disinformation and misinformation is even more powerful, and used by miscreants to sway the masses. Do I have concerns about the progression of technology? or AI? Yes and no, I see the brilliance – the potential, yet I am gravely aware of the possible repercussions, or consequences when used in the wrong hands, especially when you factor in the wild advancements in AI. Like hello AI hallucinations? I’m grateful my early childhood was lived in 3D, up trees, on bikes, daydreaming and playing out in nature, as I know that if I had been fuelled by the internet, I would have developed an insatiable appetite for it, especially in terms of feeding or quenching my thirst for knowledge, information and random facts. I lived in blissful ignorance.

As a parent of a child with an intellectual disability, I have seen how the power of assistive technology, predictive texts, internet and connectivity has broadened her life, leading to a life that has more options, choice and control. I am 100% certain that the internet and technology has given her greater scope, and improved cognitive function. So, in that respect the internet and technology is nothing short of miraculous. However, having said that the internet can be a dark and dangerous place, especially for the vulnerable and easily manipulated. Conversely, the Internet has enabled the world to open up, people connect, learn, be educated and affected by the voices, lives and experiences of people from lands and places beyond their own borders. Just think of this site, the wonder of connection and learning. What the internet and connection has done is moved many of us from living in blissful ignorance to an uncomfortable dominion of critical consciousness and awareness of the self and the other. However it has also led to desensitising the masses. This is problematic for all of humanity. We need compassion and empathy in order to move forward as a species.
