Jot down the first thing that comes to your mind.
Surprisingly, when asking someone who tends to overthink “what will your next thought be?” Or “jot down the first thing that comes to your mind?”it can extinguish spiralling thought and or creativity. I actually use it in my practice to help people who struggle with anxiety and racing thoughts at night. So, surprise-surprise I was stopped in my own creative tracks and couldn’t immediately think of something straight away, other than literally seeing the question in my mind. Being asked this type of question seems to clamp my creativity- stopping the natural and organic flow of musings. My creative brain stops and my logical self takes over. It is similar to damming my thoughts up, and only allowing the tiniest trickle through via a highly scrutinised gate. Whereas, ordinary my thoughts are free to fire, snap, flow, materialise, and connect as they will – like a dazzling array of kaleidoscopic colours, patterns and textures.
