Do you spend more time thinking about the future or the past? Why?
I definitely have learned to bring my mind and focus into this present moment; Into the βnowβ. When we focus on the past, or give the past too much attention, importance and power, we can experience feelings of loss, sadness and depression. Likewise being too focused on the future, the βwhat ifβsβ can result in overwhelming feelings of anxiety, stress and hopelessness. While trying to remain centred on the present moment, whilst gently reflecting on lessons learned, passed memories, as well as loosely planning and envisioning goals and dreams for the future can bring a sense of balance and peace. Our power is based in the present moment, our ability to act, think and be a particular way. Our ability to make one small good/positive choice after another. If we stuff up, itβs okay, we simply pick ourselves up and start again, one choice after the other.
Postscript- upon reflection (after being out in my garden at 6am preparing it for the onslaught of two stinking hot days) I realised gardening is the perfect vehicle for me to practice what I preach. I acknowledge the past, such as βok whatβs failed before, were there problems with the soil, shade, too much sun, too exposed etcβ and I plan for the future growth/space/goals. I hope that my plants take to seed and bloom where planted. Yet it is all about me being in the present moment while gardening, feeling the earth within my hands, hearing and seeing the birds, butterflies and bees interact within my garden, feeling the sun beat down on me, and the gentle breeze caress my skin. My present actions are shaped and moulded by events of the past and fears and hopes of the future moment. Itβs a balancing act. Hereβs an image from my garden this morning (6am)
