What are you good at?
I’m pretty much a Jill of many things, but a master of none! Translated, this means I have a broad base of things I’m relatively good at, but unfortunately I don’t excel at many. It relates to an idiom or saying we have here in Australia “A jack of all trades, but a master of none!”. Obviously I’m not Jack, so I’ll adopt the moniker of Jill.
I’m a good enough photographer, cook, writer, driver, singer, gardener, poet, thinker, parent, playing sudoku etc. Yet, the only thing I believe I’m better than good at is thinking outside the box, thinking laterally and seeing the big picture and small details simultaneously. Time and time again this skill shows itself, as I’m able to see, hear and intuit emerging patterns, trends and ideas. My boss really values this aspect of my being, saying she can “always rely on me to give a uniquely apt analysis of the situation”. I’m skilled at selectively juggling, navigating difficult relationships with people, and communicating. I’m pretty good at introspection, and self reflection. Everything else, I feel somewhat mediocre at. Oh, one last thing that I actually excel at – planning, researching and organising, especially planning for a holiday.
