Fate & Destiny – No.

Do you believe in fate/destiny?

I believe in serendipity, intuition, personal choices, human agency, chance/probability and hard work. I don’t believe in fate and destiny per se, as that’s too predetermined and fatalistic. What purpose is freewill, choice, agency and hard work if things have already been set in stone? Plus, by placing so much trust and belief in concepts of ‘fate & destiny’ it inadvertently robs us of self-efficacy, having ownership of actions and consequences. It would be easy to take on a ‘blame the universe’ mentality, and not fully actualising our own choices and inherent power.

I personally feel that the power of life, of existence is found in fully embracing the present moment. It’s about letting go of the tenacious tentacles of the past, and also not allowing ourselves to fall headfirst into the “what ifs?” of the future. In the present moment I have capacity to make choices and decisions, take actions and exercise self agency, which invariably change the trajectory or course of my life. I am able to respond to life, therefore creating or co-creating my life as it unfolds. It’s as though each choice and action metaphorically produces another paver for me to place down under my feet. I literally am paving my own uncharted path through life. There are no flashing neon signs with massive neon arrows guiding me along some pre-ordained path. It really is one step after the other of creating my own meandering path.

Think of a spider, it weaves its web one silken thread at a time. It simply doesn’t exist on a web already constructed by some omnipresent or omnipotent presence. That spider’s tenacity, hard work and focus predicts its outcome. Yes, factor in bad luck (ie a person accidentally walks through the web), that’s not fate or destiny, but simply chance and probability. It’s up to the spider to rebuild and if necessary adapt, by relocating to an area not frequented by tall people.
