Too hard to decide.

If you had the power to change one law, what would it be and why?

This question is too monumental to simply decide on just one law I’d choose to rescind. Additionally, we are all from such diverse cultures, countries and walks of life, and our specific national laws reflect our individual social and cultural frameworks.

I’d definitely choose to peel back a law that still embodies historical racism as a core tenet. There are still obscure laws in place which unfortunately frame society within a less than progressive paradigm. I’d like to be part of a new paradigm shift, brought on by the rescinding of laws that are in place to further marginalise the already disenfranchised. I’d strive to create a new Australia, where we truly learn from our past, and in doing so create a new socially-just and morally progressive society – A truly inclusive society.

After writing this, I would actually like to revisit October 14th 2023 where Australians voted down a referendum to enshrine an Indigenous voice in Australian parliament (and law). I’d somehow find a way to rescind a law, that would then allow prime minister and cabinet the overriding privilege to enact a law, which somehow didn’t need to follow the usual ratification process. I know that would be opening a can of worms and the potential for parliamentary abuse of power. Obviously, while I’d been given supreme power to change a law, I’d put in appropriate checks and balances to negate any form of political abuse of power. Yeah, I know I’m a little bit of a control freak, who has an ability to view a situation from a highly nuanced, multidimensional perspective. Ultimately, I’d look at laws around Treaty, especially given the fact that Australia was colonised on the lie of Terra Nullius. When in fact Australia had been home to First Nations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples for more than 60000 years. They had advanced technologies and lore systems in place, only it wasn’t valued due to the coloniser ethnocentric views and values. I’d like to set the dice rolling on repealing some of those archaic, historical laws that still bind Australia to our violent colonial past.
