A change for the better – Jan 26th – A date not to be celebrated.

Write about a few of your favorite family traditions.

One tradition is that we don’t celebrate Australia Day (Jan 26th) as it truly is in poor taste. It fails to acknowledge that today’s date actually marks #InvasionDay and a #DayOfMourning for First Nations peoples in Australia. It marks the beginning of British colonisation and the decimation of incredibly advanced cultures. I can’t imagine how back in 1788 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples had no idea of the literal bloodbath that lay ahead, and how that trauma would last generations upon generations of future peoples.
